Workplace Drama

So Marcus and I have worked at the same company for about six years total. For the first four of those years he was a senior analyst and I was a coordinator, and he made absolutely sure I never forgot which one of us mattered more. I have been sitting on this story for three months and I need to get it out.

So I've been sitting on this for about six months because I wanted to see how it played out before I posted. Short version: I got passed over, I trained my replacement without knowing it, and then I left for double the money. Long version is way more satisfying.

So this happened about three weeks ago and I'm still kind of processing it. I've told maybe two people in real life and both of them said I needed to post this somewhere. I'm not proud of every decision I made but I'm also not sorry.

I want to be clear that I am not a dramatic person. I've never rage-quit anything in my life. I stayed at a job once for six months after a coworker microwaved fish every single day because I didn't want to make it weird. So when I tell you what I did last month, understand that I reached an actual limit.

So this happened about six months ago and I'm only now able to write about it without my hands shaking. I built a client reporting system basically alone for a year and a half. Then my manager decided I was 'too close to it.'

I want to start by saying I'm not a confrontational person. I have never in my life sent a strongly worded email without deleting it three times first. But there's something about hearing your own name come out of someone's mouth followed by a complete and total lie that just... rewires you.

So my manager, Derek, has been doing this thing where he takes my work and presents it upstairs like it came from him. Small stuff at first. Then last Tuesday he did it at the all-hands in front of the entire company and I just sat there smiling because I had been ready for this exact moment since April.

I almost quit my job in February because I genuinely thought I was becoming bad at it. I'd been in this industry for six years. Six years. And suddenly I couldn't finish a single deliverable without something going wrong. Took me way too long to figure out it wasn't me.

For two years, I watched Sarah present my work as her own while I smiled and said nothing. Everyone thought I was a pushover. They didn't know I was building a case that would eventually land on the CEO's desk.
